Dreaming in the dark

“A dream is a fleeting shadow; a dream is a mirage”.
This by far, would be the most controversial statement I have ever made.
You see, I am that type of writer that tends to avoid controversy altogether. The introvert in me tries at best to avoid the backlash, the questions and maybe the criticism from airing my personal opinions every now and then, but trust me, I have had my fair share of criticism, of backlashes and of questions that made me fold despite my best efforts to avoid them. I guess these things; questions and criticisms help shape us all in ways we can never imagine and in my case, I am better open to life and whatever it throws, disappointments and heartbreaks inclusive.
That however isn’t the point of this writeup.

Paper planes

Did you make/fly paper planes as a child? You did?! Amazing. I did too. So did almost all the boys and girls who passed through or are currently living out their childhood age. It is about the oldest, commonest, dreamiest toy of our childhood days. Safe the advent of electronic remote controlled planes, it was the closest many of us got to being pilots, aeronautic engineers and flight crew and what a dream come through, to make our paper mini Boeings and jetliners fly however short the ground covered or the time traveled.

NA BREAD WE FIND

Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil” This became my favorite part of our Lord’s Prayer, the only prayer I prayed for the past 11 years, since I became another Nigerian youth with a target painted on my back. Ok; maybe the other part I fancied, was “give us this day, our daily bread”.

AWOOF DEY PURGE (Tales of Philemon)

Friday, 18th September, 2020 started like any normal day. Someone with one of those Igbo-made Bluetooth Mp3 speakers had just downloaded Davido’s FEM and was playing the song on repeat while we all ate mouth (lip synced) the still-new lyrics of the song and chorused the FEM like we were part of a boy-band.

MULAN - THE EQUATOR (A movie review)

He’s a girl?! To become invincible in a world of men, a woman has to become a man. This is the bane of the existence of a woman, in a world, a society that is rigged to favor muscle, power and the crease of a trouser. I have recently learned that, when push comes to shove, the woman too can become the man the world wants to see. Strong, fierce, rock and sturdy.
But what then happens to who she’s meant to be and who she wants to be?

READ: LETTER TO GOD - 7

27, Destiny close,
Providence lodge,
Faith on fate Boulevard,
A place in location and allocation,
Somewhere under the endless roof.
This day and month in the year of our Lord.

Office of the Almighty,
The unseen headquarters,
The skyscraper in the very sky,
A place called heaven.

LETTER TO GOD

Dear God,
The knight to whom the king’s most treasured gem is betrothed
Must be ready to slay the king’s most fearsome foe
Like kings we sway in majestic gait across bridges
On the backs of those whose backs made the pillars
And in the crevices and far reaches of the bridge
We find not one man to embrace and grace
But He who made the king made the gem
Made kings, made men whose backs made these bridges
He’s no man to embrace; grace of His will he gives
The praise of kings He chews with His all reaching mouth…..

LETTER TO GOD

Dear God,
Trust heaven is safe. If it weren’t, I suppose the world would fall off its hinges by now. As I draw close to the term end of my exposition of letters, I reckon I would be doing immense injustice to myself and to the teeming questions on the minds of many of your sons, daughters and servants and to this end, today’s instalment will be the expression of these queries sent to nowhere-elsewhere-somewhere but here (heaven)..........

LETTER TO GOD

Dear God,
I take a break from my conquest of 7 letters to make an outburst. The event that influenced the break and the topic also broke me. There’s only a lot a sane person can take in a world laden with madness, seethed with hatred, intolerance and an abhorrence of all that is sensible, right and true. Isn’t it outrageous that man; a creature of creation, created “gods” and touches of hallowed divinity, made so sacred that common reasoning that doesn’t conform with the dictates of the creations of the creation is sacrilegious and blasphemous?.........

LETTER TO GOD

Dear God,
In my daily transaction of emotions and survival, everyday has been about revelations and realizations. You’d reckon that my previous letters have reflected this in passing references. However, I acknowledge that my finite knowledge is but a fickle, seamlessly insignificant, minuscule fraction of your abundance and wealth of all there is and all there was, my knowledge inclusive. Regardless of all that is, and all I am, and how you have seen exactly how this frail attempt at expression will read, I will still put these thoughts in words, only for my sanity’s sake.........

"THE LEGEND" OLADELE MICHAEL OLAKUNLE (TRIBUTE TO A GREAT FATHER)

INSIGHT
- Death is inevitable. Even the best of us will die. We all must die, giants and dwarfs, rich and poor, death is inescapable. Papa too died, but not to me, not to my twin, not to my sister. Papa lived, Papa lives, Papa lives on.
- Papa to us was a well-guarded secret, like a map to a treasure chest, well kept in the innermost chambers of our heart. Only Papa was the map, the treasure and what you’d find even in the said chambers.
- Michael Kunle Oladele, was and is to us, a legend. He was everything and more. He was something different, a serial role player to everyone he came across and was doing in at best even when it wasn’t easy at all. And yes, you may not have known him, but, I’d like to give you a chance to meet my father.
- Every time i made a just call, made a right decision that kept me out of harm, I always knew, his voice and his words guided me. Even in death, when the boulder falls where I would have been, I smile and say, Papa, I think that was you, my guardian angel watching from above. And if I was to describe him in a short sentence, I’d say “My father, My Angel”.
- This entire write-up cannot even describe the complete essence of the man he was. This is just 3 kids who thoroughly misses their dad and who would rather celebrate the man he was than disrespect his memories by being mournful.

READ: SANDCASTLES

Every now and then, creatives hit a brick wall. It almost seems impossible to come back from there. You find yourself stuck, hanging or floating, your mind; a wound up clock, spiraling out of control. Such was the state of my mind for a few days and nothing seemed to make sense. I felt the ground quake underneath and the walls, cave in, but I was too petrified, too rigged, too transfixed to the what nots and the if nots, that the grains of the material with which I had built my castle, the mansion of the ambition I dwelled in, fell, grain by grain, grit after grit and I was to myself a zombified version of me. In such hard times, books, music, adventures, movies and the comfort of friends and relatives, not particularly one for some or maybe all for others, help remedy this ill feeling.....
